Diaryx full release!
Diaryx 1.0 is now released! Try it out at app.diaryx.org!
This milestone comes after months of consistent work. This Diaryx.org website itself is created and hosted using the Diaryx app!
That said, there is a long way to go. And I am committed to seeing Diaryx through. At the end of this month, I will participate in the Hackathon for the Sandbox program. If I am successful, I will be able to work on this project a lot more and really give it a shot at succeeding.
What can I do with Diaryx now?
First off: Diaryx is a batteries-included note-taking app. It uses a battle-tested rich text editor that supports styling, colored highlights, tables, footnotes1, and more.
Second, Diaryx saves all your files as Markdown with YAML frontmatter, inspired by the local-first software movement championed by apps such as Obsidian or Logseq. But the editor is friendly to those not familiar with plain text syntax, so they get the portability and longevity of Markdown without needing technical knowledge.
Diaryx also takes an additional step forward by adopting a “metadata-included” philosophy. There is no index, nor are there difficult-to-manage external metadata files. The metadata is entirely self-contained in the files themselves, including their relationships to each other via a part_of/contents hierarchy.
This hierarchy opens up a world of emergent functionality, including audience filtering. Have some notes that you would like your family to read, but not the public? Slap a “family” tag on that entry (or that entire collection of entries with one click), and it is automatically filtered out of the public eye. But export with a family filter, and all the right entries are there! This extends to an arbitrary number of audience tags, so you can have different sets of your writing available to as many groups of people as you like.
I’m also introducing the Diaryx Plus paid plan!
Diaryx Plus
Diaryx Plus is a paid plan offering additional modern features, including multi-device sync, live editing with guests, and publishing your workspace as a website.
The reason I require a paid plan for these features is because they require server compute, which isn’t free. All features that work on your computer are free. If you want, you can even get the sync server from Github and run on your own server if you have the technical know-how. But for convenience, I offer a hosted solution so you can benefit from these features without needing to bother with all those things.
The future
I have a roadmap on the Github repository, but here is the summary:
- Fix bugs and stabilize things, prioritizing features used by Plus users
- A native app for iOS devices
Those are ones I believe will have high impact, and will help Diaryx achieve its mission.
I’m looking for early adopter users who can help me find bugs and improve user experience. I want Diaryx to be the home of meaningful writing, and that means high standards, so don’t hold back!
Thank you!
Thank you for all those who have shown support! And especially for those who show support in the future, because one thing I know for sure is that Diaryx is just getting started.
Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to report issues. I’m working on improving contact avenues, possibly integrating a feedback option in the app.
